Celebrating Dr. Seuss All Month Long!

Dr. Seuss’ birthday may be on March 2, but at the Chestermere Playschool, we’re celebrating all month long! We’re diving into the wacky and wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with some of our favourite books and hands-on activities inspired by his imaginative stories.

Ten Apples Up on Top!

Inspired by Ten Apples Up on Top!, we practice balance, coordination, and counting with a fun beanbag activity. After reading the story, the kids take turns balancing beanbags on their heads just like the characters in the book! One by one, they add more beanbags while moving around the room, trying to stack as many as possible without letting them fall. To add an extra challenge, we create obstacle courses and pathways for them to navigate while keeping their "apples" steady!

The Cat in the Hat

The Cat’s balancing act in The Cat in the Hat inspires us to create our own! Using playdough as a base, the kids experiment with balance and symmetry by stacking small objects like buttons, blocks, and tiny toys. They can stick the objects together with playdough or balance them freely, how high can they build their tower before it topples?

1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Our 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish activity turns storytime into a hands-on fishing adventure! Using fishing poles with magnets, the kids “catch” colourful fish laminated with safety pins on the back. They can sort them by colour, count them, or even match letters or numbers to practice early literacy and math skills. Whether fishing from a homemade pond or right off the floor, it’s always a splash of fun!

March is full of Seuss-inspired fun, and we can’t wait to see where these silly stories take us next!
